Small Game
Small game in New Mexico is abundant....
-
Rabbits are through-out the state. I suggest not hunting until your absolutely sure that the fleas are gone. This starts about mid-December. Stay in the sage brush for best results for cotton tails.
-
Squirrels, we have a lot of good areas for squirrels one of the best is Mount Taylor.
-
Coyotes abundant throughout the state best areas around Cuba in low lands.
-
Prairie dogs ……Well they are an absolute problem in New Mexico hurting livestock and horses alike. They are also very cute which creates a conflict with city folk and PETA so if you hunt dogs, don’t brag, just shoot and go on. The problems these animals cause are devastating to New Mexico crops and the spread of disease. They are throughout New Mexico. Most ranchers and farmers will let you on their land to hunt them.
-
Snakes. lots of them rattlers in the southern part of the state; however, there are also an abundant amount of timber rattlers in the mountains.
